The Scholarship Match

It has never been more critical that we remove barriers for future health care leaders. Did you know the Association of American Medical Colleges has projected a 90,000 physician shortage by 2025? Aspiring medical students want to fill that gap, but many can't afford to graduate with $200,000 in debt. Our graduate program also relies on scholarships to attract the best and brightest people who may find the cures if given the resources.

With a gift of $1,000 or more... can donate to an endowed scholarship fund of your choice, and Penn State College of Medicine will match your gift dollar for dollar. For multi-year pledges of at least $1,000 per year to qualifying scholarships, we will provide this match for up to five years.

To create a new scholarship... can make a gift equal to the minimum amount needed to endow the fund (contact us for current endowment levels), over five years. When you make your pledge payments, we will provide the match. Your endowed scholarship will be activated once we receive your pledge in full.

Q & A

When does the match begin?

All gifts made on and after July 1, 2016, will be matched until all available funds are expended. Match dollars will be transferred twice each year (at fiscal and calendar year-end).

How do I make a gift?

To make an immediate gift online, select the yellow GIVE TODAY button in the top right corner of the page, or click here. Choose the "Scholarships"  radio button. If you would like to learn more about creating a new scholarship, please contact our office for an appointment at 717-531-8497 or by emailFind out more ways to give here.

Is there a minimum or maximum donation amount?

We will match any gift between $1,000 and $2 million. The match can be utilized to augment an annual gift or pledge for scholarship support.

What about multi-year pledges?

When we receive a donor’s signed pledge paperwork that reflects annual payments of at least $1,000, we will encumber the full match amount for the multi-year pledge. When annual payments are received, the matching amount will be transferred to the designated scholarship fund.

Can I fulfill my $1,000 commitment through multiple annual payments (i.e., monthly or quarterly)?

No. Only one-time gifts of $1,000 or more are eligible for the match.

I work for a matching gift company. Will my employer’s contribution also qualify for the match?

Yes. The College of Medicine will match both contributions, provided they are each $1,000 or more.

Can I take advantage of the match more than once?

A donor may make multiple gifts or commitments that are match eligible until the challenge ends.

Are deferred gifts, including bequests, eligible to receive the match?

What if a donor pledges to create a scholarship but doesn’t fulfill the pledge commitment?

If a donor does not fulfill the minimum amount to endow a new scholarship within five years, any pledge payments and secured match dollars previously received toward that scholarship will be redirected to an existing scholarship of the donor’s choice, including the Penn State College of Medicine General Scholarship Fund.
