Child Life Program
The Child Life Program embodies our commitment to patient- and family-centered care. Child Life Specialists focus on making a child and family’s stay comfortable, helping them prepare for, adjust to, and cope with potential stressors of the health care setting. They provide educational and social activities, musical therapy, and emotional support.
Child Life Specialists help ensure that kids are meeting developmental and educational milestones while undergoing treatment. The program also makes resources such as laundry facilities, craft and computer lounges, playrooms, and the Ronald McDonald House available to families. We want kids to feel like kids, not hospital patients during their stay.
The Hummingbird Program celebrates the spirit of our kids and helps illuminate the miracle of life. Named for a magical creature—that flies in a figure-eight, the symbol of infinity—the Hummingbird Program offers palliative care services for more than 240 families and ongoing education opportunities for pediatricians.
Since it was founded in 2007, the program has grown in clinical activity and works to address families' physical, emotional, social, and spiritual needs. Palliative care is a subject that is often difficult to discuss. However, children with life-limiting illnesses are now living longer, and we know the value of pediatricians working in partnership with families’ wishes.
